Selecting the correct LED driver is critical to achieving reliable, efficient illumination. In this article we walk through the key parameters to consider: input voltage range, output current accuracy, dimming capability and thermal management.
Input Voltage Range
Always ensure the driver input range comfortably covers your supply rail, including any transients. For automotive applications look for drivers tolerating 40 V or more.
Constant Current vs Constant Voltage
LEDs are current-controlled devices — a constant-current driver provides the most stable brightness. Constant-voltage supplies require an external current-limiting resistor or a secondary driver stage.
Dimming Methods
PWM dimming maintains colour consistency at reduced brightness, while analogue dimming can shift the colour point. For colour-critical applications always prefer PWM.
